Worcester, MA – Ascentria Care Alliance opposes the Trump Administration’s new executive order that would further restrict refugee resettlement in the United States. The new order, which replaces the one issued in late January, 2017, temporarily suspends the refugee resettlement program and continues the travel ban previously imposed on individuals from Syria, Iran, Somalia, Sudan, Libya and Yemen. Taking effect on Thursday, March 16, 2017, this latest action resets the refugee resettlement suspension for 120 days and the travel ban for 90 days, beginning on March 16.

Although the new executive order no longer restricts Syrian refugees for an indefinite period of time, and removes Iraq from the previous travel ban, it continues to ban refugees from majority Muslim countries.

“We aren’t afraid of those who have fled their war-torn homelands, seeking safety and freedom. We welcome new neighbors and embrace them,” says Angela Bovill, Ascentria president and CEO. “Refugees are part of what makes America great. We are better off as a country because of their hard work and contributions to our communities and economy. Refugees are customers, employees and entrepreneurs who pay taxes. And, as grateful neighbors, they help others in many acts of kindness.”

Exemptions for Special Immigrant Visa holders and Lawful Permanent Residents are permitted under this latest order; however, the significant reduction in refugees allowed into the U.S. for FY 2017 – 110,000 to 50,000 – remains in place. With more than 37,000 refugees having already arrived in the U.S. this fiscal year, very few who have already completed the extensive vetting process will have the chance to come to the U.S. before the cap is reached.

Ascentria Care Alliance remains committed to the support of refugees and migrants. We view refugees as assets to our communities and recognize that their protection and resettlement is part of our obligations as a leader of the free world. Ascentria will continue to work closely with our local, regional and national partners to advance those policies that protect vulnerable people and strengthen our nation.
