Dear Friend,

Right now, the New Hampshire legislature is considering a discriminatory, anti-immigrant bill, SB 525, which would restrict and exclude certain immigrants from critical social programs – which include English courses, high school education, and workforce development. This bill is designed to discriminate against the immigrant community members. It would also put an undue administrative burden on adult education programs.

Sample Script: "I’m (name) from (city, county, or congregation) and I’m calling to ask the Representative to oppose SB 525, which would restrict and exclude certain immigrants from critical social programs – which include English courses, high school education, and workforce development. This bill is designed to discriminate against the immigrant community members. It would also put an undue administrative burden on adult education programs. As a welcoming state, we embrace all of our neighbors. I urge you to uphold our values of compassion, hospitality, and welcome and reject SB 525 today."

This bill excludes certain immigrants, divides people by their immigration status, and would be impossible to implement. Adult Learning Centers are prohibited from collecting the data, like Social Security numbers, that would be necessary to determine that someone is a "legal resident." This vague “legal residency” terminology causes confusion, and risks denying financial assistance to an overly broad group of people as a precaution. It also violates the spirit and vision of adult learning centers across the state as vibrant centers of community life.

Please call and email the House Education Committee, and tell them that as people of faith, we believe in embracing all of our neighbors. Join us in calling on the New Hampshire lawmakers to reject SB 525. For more information about this bill, please click here.

Thank you for standing with us in the fight.
