The Expanded Cultural Orientation Program is a new initiative through Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Services and AmeriCorps. The program is designed to provide assistance to newly arrived refugees who are in the first 90 days of their resettlement and is being offered at Ascentria’s Services for New Americans office in Westfield, MA. The program teaches refugees about US culture, the English language, laws, healthcare, safety, banking, employment, housing and other important aspects of life in the USA. Read more

Education empowers achievement and Ascentria empowers people. Staff, volunteers, clients, and donors all play a key role in this effort. 

Thanks to the generosity of 52 Lutheran churches that participated in Ascentria’s backpack drive at the 2015 ELCA New England Synod Assembly, and Lifesong Church in Sutton Massachusetts (MA), 298 youth being served at Ascentria will be starting the 2015 school year with a new backpack filled with school supplies. These backpacks will give children the tools and the confidence they need to be successful in school.   Read more

“You have two hands, one to help yourself and one to help others,” is a favorite quote of Ashley Nichols, an intern with Ascentria’s Therapeutic Family Connections (TFC) in New Hampshire. A graduate of Smith College, Ashley is working on a master’s degree in social work and a law degree, and spends two days a week volunteering with Ascentria’s TFC program.   Read more

Diane Baker is a long time Nashua resident and a retired developmental disabilities social worker who answered the Call to Volunteer in more ways than one. “When I got a call to mentor a young man from Sudan I thought, I don’t have a car, I have some trouble walking, but I’ll go for it, he only lives a few blocks away.
