As an organization committed to welcoming those in need of refuge, Ascentria is deeply concerned about the recent decision to pause all resettlement efforts. The executive order includes a review every 90 days, with no requirements for when resettlement must restart. This action will have profound consequences, not only for the individuals and families seeking safety but also for our local economy.
This pause undermines our responsibility to provide refuge and protection to those fleeing war, persecution and violence. Refugees often face significant challenges, and their resettlement represents not just an opportunity for a fresh start, but a chance to embrace hope. In the face of global crises, this break in resettlement will leave many families stranded in unsafe conditions, with uncertain futures.
Refugees resettling in New England contribute significantly to our communities’ economic health. Refugees bring diverse skill sets, entrepreneurship and a strong work ethic, helping to fill gaps in key industries, support local businesses, and contribute to the growth of a robust labor force. Many refugees start new businesses, creating jobs and increasing local tax revenues, which supports schools, healthcare, and infrastructure. By halting resettlement efforts, we risk losing these vital contributions that drive innovation, sustain local economies, and strengthen our workforce.
The National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) provides evidence that refugees, despite initially facing challenges such as lower levels of education and language barriers, improve their economic outcomes overtime. After six years in the country, refugees work at higher rates than native-born workers, contributing positively to the economy. Additionally, according to NBER, refugees pay taxes that exceed relocation costs and social benefits over the first 20 years in the U.S., demonstrating their long-term economic contributions.
Ascentria calls on the administration to reconsider this decision, recognizing the dual benefit to both our economy and the humanitarian values we uphold as a nation. Resettling refugees is not just an act of compassion – it is an investment in our future prosperity, resilience and moral responsibility and a reaffirmation of our nation’s role as a leader in promoting global stability and peace.
Ascentria is calling on leaders to reverse this decision, but we need your support to sustain our work during this critical time. Your donation helps Ascentria provide essential resources and advocacy for those in limbo, ensuring we are ready to welcome refugees the moment resettlement resumes.
Together, we can reaffirm our nation’s commitment to compassion, fairness, and prosperity for all.
